Due to our continued growth, Phoenix Mold and Engineering is actively seeking a Mold Maker for its operations in Temperance, MI. Phoenix Molding and Engineering (PME) PME is a locally owned and operated mold making and machining company that started in June of 2021. We specialize in tool and mold-making for the Automotive, Agriculture, and Aerospace industry. Headquartered in Temperance, Michigan, we are in the Midwestern Triangle (Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit.) Our proximity to two major North/South expressways, and East/West 80/90 turnpike puts us within minutes of the country’s most efficient transportation arteries.
Position Overview
Mold Makers perform a critical role at PME that consists of a wide variety of tasks that are vital to our mold manufacturing efforts. It requires highly skilled hands-on machining capability, a comprehensive background in the mold making process, with good planning and communication skills.
Duties And Responsibilities
Work with fellow team members to assist in the routing, planning, work instructions, problem solving, and expediting of molds and components on assigned jobs. Report and log work time accurately to jobs.
- Develop a plan for your activities, identify risks to completion, establish work priorities, set milestone goals, regularly assess the progress on the job, and escalate issues that will affect delivery.
- Utilize knowledge of various types of steel (P20, S7, H13, SS etc.) and know their relative hardness levels to determine machining equipment needed for each.
- Apply knowledge of all tool room equipment and fundamental set-ups (CNC, Milling Machine, Lathes, EDM) to achieve tight tolerance results.
- Read and understand blueprints, CAD files, written, and verbal work instructions to perform machining of mold components.
- Fabricate mold components such as cores and cavities, fitting inserts, heat treating and finish cutting, grinding to achieve the required dimensional specifications.
- Monitor the status of the incoming components of your molds and communicate as necessary with the purchasing team to verify you will have the components when required to meet delivery.
- Assemble the mold and to prepare it for testing. Spot and verify fits and functionality of all mechanisms, sliding components, and cooling system. Complete inspections of the cores/cavities to verify proper seal offs, dimensions, and finish.
- Knowledge of SMC Compression molds a plus.
- Troubleshoot issues if they arise and develop plans to resolve. Adjust final fits and components to ensure the mold will perform in testing and production. Document critical dimensions as required.
- Perform mold disassembly/assembly and machining tasks to develop/fine tune molds, repair molds, and make engineering changes. Assist others to complete mold cleaning and repairs.
Job Requirements
Education and Experience
- Technical Trade School Certification preferred
- 5+ years’ experience in machine tools, mold design & mold fabrication
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts with respect to part geometry & trigonometry.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with differing levels of authority and influence.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Dependable & self-directed to work with minimal supervision to independently complete work projects.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of shop mathematics, complicated and involved drawings, specifications, formulas, and a wide variety of precision measuring instruments together with a broad knowledge in machine tool and die.
- Tool and fixture design in drafting or CAD.
- Proficient in MS Office Products (Word, Excel) and in ERP/MRP systems.
- CNC machine experience.
- SMC Compression Molds.
